What does “Ilusqui” mean?
Illustrations by a Squirrel

What inspires your illustrations?
My artistic voice is shaped through a blend of realism and whimsical storytelling, primarily using charcoal and ink, though I also work with colored pencil and watercolor. Every piece I create feels like a little storybook—it tells a tale, often using animals as symbols for the people I love.
-
Why do you use animals to represent people?
That started early in life. My family had nicknames for one another based on animals. I was “Squirrel,” and my mom, always gentle and strong, was our “Pandita”—our little panda. Later in life I had my animal pack, and everyone had a animal as a nickname. Animals let me capture the essence of someone without being literal. It’s a way to honor people’s spirits while inviting play and imagination.
-
Are your pieces based on real stories or imagined ones?
Many of my pieces live in the space between truth and imagination. For example, my Panda and Squirrel series is among the most personal and intimate—it’s rooted in real experiences and the deep connection I shared with my mom. In contrast, my steampunk series, Whimsical Contraptions, isn’t drawn from specific life events, but each animal character is inspired by someone I know. I weave in metaphors and whimsy throughout, but at the heart of every illustration, there’s a thread of truth.
